Purpose in the workplace

Lately, I have been thinking a lot about being purposeful in all I do.  This means that I want to be intentional and focused on the quality of work and services that I deliver.

I have learned that if you become purposeful and intentional about how you work, the way you interact with your colleagues and value of your output,  this can increase productivity, passion as well as fulfilment in your current career. In my eyes, that’s a win-win!

We can all work with purpose right now. You don’t need to be the CEO of a global company or even need to have been considered for promotion just yet. All  you need to do is recognise a need in the workplace, and have the vision and entrepreneurial lens to see beyond the here and now

In whatever it is that you do in the world of work, think about the following ways to have purpose in the workplace:

  • How can I make a difference?

  • How can I see a need and meet it?

  • How can I use all my life experiences to help others and be an asset?

I believe that going to work is more than getting a payslip at the end of every week or month. It is also about using your gifts, talents and natural ability to serve a greater good. Whether you love the work you do, or dislike it when Monday comes around, it is vital that we all learn to practise working with excellence.  Your career, education and life experiences are all examples of training ground preparing you for your next move. Everything about you has a voice and place in the workplace- your smile, your past experience, ability to deal with difficult clients, or even the way you think outside the box to deliver new content. Use it all to work with purpose. This is also another way for us all to be accountable and responsible for the talents that have been given to us.  I honestly believe that we all have gifting’s  to offer the world, and what better way to cultivate this than in the workplace! No matter your rank in the organisation, what you do matters and is important in helping the workplace thrive.

If you are not where you want to be yet professionally, do not minimize your current role, nor downplay the value of what you do.  Instead, welcome new challenges to work purposefully and find the time to do it. See work as an adventure, no matter where you are on the career ladder!
