How to manage the 5-9 side hustle

There is a whole new generation of young professionals who are no longer satisfied with the 9-5 work life. They now have a desire to make a bigger impact in the world through entrepreneurship and other innovative business ideas. They know that there is something more out there. Something else they could be doing, something the world needs to see through their individual passions and ideas.  According to Forbes, Generation Y also known as ‘millennial’s’, are likely to be discontent with their full-time jobs and this has led to a generation of employees who maintain a side hustle.

As a millennial, I can definitely see the rise of people in my social circle and extended network who are not are not only working full-time hours in our respective industries, but also a 5pm-9pm to make our other dreams turn into a reality. People may decide to have a 5-9 for a variety of reasons. Some which include supplementing a low salary in their current role, the desire to work on something that is in alignment to their values, passion, or a purpose or the longing to develop their skills set in order to enhance their prospects. Whatever the reason may be, it cannot be denied that we now live in such exciting times where you can blaze your own trail. The rise of social media has also allowed us to connect and work with anyone across the globe at any time, which in turn has allowed peopled to explore opportunities outside of a traditional career path.

For those of you who already have a 5-9 side hustle, I am sure managing your schedule and expectations can be quite challenging. In light of this, I have come up with a few tips to help you keep your eye on the prize and go forward in the direction of your dreams.

Tip 1: Focus on managing your energy. There will be many things battling for your attention and you definitely want to avoid the risk of draining yourself by trying to fulfil every task or obligation. In the early stages of your side hustle, everything is exciting, you want to say yes to every opportunity and also work at 100mph. However, after a while you’ll soon find that you could be stretching yourself too thin and your energy starts falling down the drain!  In order to manage your energy, make sure you commit to a schedule that works best for you and also be clear on what you can realistically deliver. It is also more than okay to say ‘no’ to others and to not feel compelled to agree to every request.

Tip 2: What’s your why? It is very important that you always remember WHY you are doing your 5-9 side hustle. When times get hard or you feel slightly demotivated your WHY will keep you moving towards success. Money can’t be your only motivator. Something or someone else should be inspiring you to keep moving forward, as well as helping you to stay motivated.

Tip 3: Use your network. Believe it or not, there are people out there who want to see you win! As the go-getter that you are, you’re probably used to figuring things out and get things done independently. However, in a 5-9 side hustle, you will quickly learn that it is not easy to do everything by yourself. You may need someone to act a sounding board for your new business idea, a friend to help you retweet some of your services or gain access to high profile people in their network. Please don’t be afraid to ask for help. Get assistance from supportive and reliable people (in person or from your online social network) who can point you in the right direction as well as lightening the load!
